Are your kids looking for a summer camp with a difference? Our Adventure Summer Camps take place in Squamish amidst the beautiful Coast Mountains with an activity roster full of adventure, all supervised by professional guides.
Some of our most memorable childhood moments are from summer camp. It was an opportunity to spend time with kids our own age away from the school system. Camp counselors taught us the importance of self-reliance and stepping away from the convenience of civilization every now and then. We tried adventurous activities that we’d never experienced before. Now that many of us have children of our own and another summer is on the horizon, many parents are searching for a suitable camp to pass on that same experience.
Mountain activities can be hazardous. That’s why our summer camps are led by qualified guides, not older teenagers or students. We do offer activities you would not typically see at your usual summer camp such as rock climbing and via ferrata (see below), all with a stringent safety policy in place and meticulously maintained equipment. All guides go through an extensive training program led by our owner and ACMG/IFMGA lead guide Eric Dumerac.
The location in the heart of the Coast Mountains is the key to unlocking the potential of our summer camps. Within less than an hour’s bus drive, our groups can access the Sea to Sky Gondola in Squamish, Peak to Peak Gondola in Whistler, Alice Lake, Garibaldi Lake, Squamish Smoke Bluffs, Shannon Falls, and plenty of other unique destinations all under the care of our highly qualified guides and leaders. Some of our activities include rock climbing, glacier tours, via ferrata, nature hikes and low ropes courses. There is also an educational element to our camps where your kids learn about local First Nations culture and history, age-appropriate outdoor skills as well as self-confidence and leadership. Our programs are available for two age groups; Garibaldi Adventure Summer Camp for Kids (ages 7-12, three days beginning August 8, 2018) and Tantalus Adventure Summer Camp for Teens (ages 13-18, six days, beginning July 22, 2018).
The Cheakamus Centre is located on 420 acres of ecological reserve in the Paradise Valley near Squamish, BC. The centre is owned by the North Vancouver School District and offers a wide range of experiential environmental programs to children from the Sea to Sky corridor, lower mainland, and beyond. The crown jewel of the Cheakamus Centre is the Environmental Learning Centre (ELC), which has earned LEED® Platinum certification for its sustainable design. The 9000-square-foot features a large reception and dining area, multi-purpose classrooms, exhibit spaces and an outdoor amphitheater. When campers aren’t out for activities or sleeping, they’ll likely be spending time in this beautiful and modern “treehouse” structure.
The accommodation is tucked away in the forest in log-style cabins surrounded by walking trails, tall cedars and plenty of grassy outdoor spaces. All campers need to bring is a sleeping bag, pillow, towel and personal toiletries.
Meals are prepared and served by the Cheakamus Centre chefs with locally-sourced ingredients including herb and vegetables from gardens on site. The culinary team are also able to accommodate a wide range of dietary needs.
Kids may not immediately see the value of time spent in the forest and the mountains, but we’re certain they will come away from our camps feeling accomplished, refreshed and with plenty of new friends. We honestly believe our adventure summer camps are the best thing to for youth to experience this summer. Please don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions.Cheakamus Centre, summer camps
