What is the WRCS?

THE WOMEN’S ROCK CLIMBING SERIES aims to provide the adventurous women of the Sea to Sky region with the means to develop and progress their climbing skills in a supportive, mentorship-styled learning environment.

Learn outdoor rock climbing in the world class destination of Squamish BC. Participants will obtain the essential skills required to safely and effectively enjoy this amazing sport. Instruction is professionally provided in the safest and most supportive environment by our certified ACMG and MSAA guides and our cutting-edge curriculum. The course is suitable for those with or without previous climbing experience.

COURSE INFORMATION

Our 2 Day Intro to Outdoor Rock Climbing course allows beginner climbers to safely undertake top-rope climbing and introduce them to trad gear and techniques. Suitable for complete beginners and for indoor climbers. There is a strong focus on safe practices.

We use a systematic approach to introduce and refine critical outdoor rock climbing lessons over 2 days.

  • Rock climbing movement
  • Rope management
  • Anchor building and assessment

  • Seconding, cleaning and racking trad gear
  • Route selection and climbing grades
  • Overall skills practice, coaching and refinement

With this course our goal is to ensure that all participants are able to independently begin both sport and trad climbing by building a strong foundation to allow for ultimate safety, excellent technique, and a rapid progression.

As you progress in the future, you may consider our excellent Intro to Multi-Pitch course to enjoy the soaring multi-pitch routes. Consider also taking the Rock Rescue course to learn essential rope rescue systems.

You can take comfort in knowing that our instructors are certified guides who possess a great depth of experience, excel at their trade and that Mountain Skills Academy & Adventures is the Sea to Sky corridor’s longest established and most trusted local mountain school!

The course is run over 2 full days, with a low student to guide ratio and with your guide following our carefully crafted curriculum and lesson plan.

Day 1: Meet your guide at 8:30am at the Squamish Adventure Centre.

The guide will have everyone sign a waiver before having a safety discussion and performing a gear check. They will then discuss the day's objectives and lesson plan.

The day will end at approximately 4:30pm with a debrief.

Day 2: Meet your guide at 8:30am at the Squamish Adventure Centre.

The group will again discuss the day’s objectives and select appropriate routes together. Day 2 will focus on trad climbing gear, cleaning and racking, as well as continuing refinement of rock climbing techniques.

The day will end at approximately 4:30pm with a debrief, discussion of course and next step recommendations.

Instructor provides group equipment:
  • Ropes
  • Anchor building equipment
  • Trad climbing rack
Individual Equipment:
  • Rock climbing shoes
  • Harness
  • Helmet
  • Belay device (with 1 locking carabiner)
  • Prusik 1.5-1.7m, 7mm
  • Anchor building equipment (2 locking carabiners, 2 non-locking carabiners & 120cm or 240cm sling)
  • Chalk bag

The above gear can be purchased from MEC, Climb On (37873 Cleveland Ave, Squamish) or Escape Route (40222 Glenalder Pl, Squamish).

If you do not have any climbing gear you can rent a Rock Climbing Essentials package for $5.00.

Clothing (Plan ahead, check the weather forecast, and dress accordingly):

  • Climbing pants (light pants that allow maximum mobility)
  • T-shirt
  • Mid layer fleece or wool top
  • Weatherproof shell jacket
  • Down or synthetic insulating “puffy” jacket
  • Warm hat
  • Light gloves

It is beneficial to practice using your own equipment under the supervision of a professional.

Day 2:

On this day, apart from instructing the trad climbing items, your guide takes a careful but more supervisory and coaching role in order to encourage skill mastery which every participants needs in order to undertake safe independent climbing after the course.

  • Tying in and Belaying review
  • Introduction to trad climbing movement skills
  • The trad rack
  • Seconding, cleaning and racking trad gear
  • Mock Leads in preparation for the next phases of traditional and lead climbing
  • Threading the anchor and lowering off review

Advanced Trad Clinic

Trad climbing, or traditional rock climbing, is the original style of rock climbing in which climbers set and remove their protection as they climb.
