SQUAMISH VIA FERRATA LAUNCH IN THE SEA TO SKY SET FOR JUNE 19
Easy and accessible climbing experience to open just steps from the Sea to Sky Gondola
SQUAMISH, BC June 10, 2015 – The latest way to experience climbing in the Sea to Sky Corridor has arrived. On June 19, 2015, Squamish-based adventure company Sea to Sky Guides will begin running its most accessible climbing experience yet – the Squamish Via Ferrata Tour. This one and a half hour tour will operate in conjunction with the Sea to Sky Gondola, allowing guests an express lift to the Summit Lodge at 885m overlooking picturesque Howe Sound with views to the alpine peak of Sky Pilot.
“It’s really inclusive, it’s something that you can invite all of your friends and family to regardless of their climbing experience,” says Monica Tang, Operations Manager at Sea to Sky Guides. “The Sea to Sky Gondola makes it super-quick to access, the harnessing deck is literally 20 metres from the top station of the gondola. Guests also have all the amenities of the Summit Lodge available to them before and after the tour.”
Via Ferrata , an Italian phrase meaning “the iron way” is a popular alpine experience in the European Alps where people access the same terrain as rock climbers and mountaineers with the relative ease of climbing a ladder. Steel rungs are fixed into the rock with steel cable running alongside the route, which harnessed climbers clip themselves to, with reinforced lanyards specific for Via Ferrata.
The Squamish Via Ferrata tour begins with a guided hike down from the Summit Lodge through beautiful old growth forest to the “Flight Deck,” where a trained guide clips guests into the safety mechanism and the climbing begins. Ascending a series of pitches totalling approximately 100 metres of vertical, guests will traverse a sky ledge, cross a suspension bridge and ascend up glacier-worn granite, all while aided by the steel rungs and protected by the safety cable. The route finishes below the sun deck of the Summit Lodge, where groups can unwind and enjoy the other attractions adjacent to the Sea to Sky Gondola.
The Squamish Via Ferrata tour takes approximately 1.5 hours and departs daily at 9.45am, 11:30am, 1:15pm and 3:00pm, with later departures available on weekends.
