We spend a full day skiing and riding while covering uphill and downhill travel, equipment use and safety awareness.
With no previous experience or training required, this first step will show you what exists beyond the resort. Our team will share their passion over a day focused on safety and fun.

The FAQs listed below are specific to this activity. For broader questions regarding clothing recommendations, equipment lists, lift tickets, or booking and weather policies—as well as other common topics—please visit our General FAQs.
Activity-Specific FAQs
Is a lift ticket required?
Yes. You’ll use the Whistler or Blackcomb lifts to access the backcountry. If you don’t already have a pass or lift ticket, you can purchase a discounted backcountry lift ticket through MSAA at checkout.
How physically demanding is this course?
You should be in good physical shape and comfortable skiing or riding intermediate (blue) runs in various snow conditions. Expect to be outside all day and climbing uphill on skis or a splitboard using skins.
Is avalanche safety gear included?
No. Participants must bring their own avalanche safety gear (transceiver, probe, shovel), touring skis or splitboard with skins, and proper boots. Discounted rental options are available through our local partners if needed.
Do I need to have taken AST 1 before joining this course?
No. This is a pre-AST course, intended to help people get introduced to the basics of backcountry travel, equipment, and terrain. If you already have AST 1, we recommend joining a Whistler Backcountry Ski & Splitboard Tour or AST Refresher instead.
Who is this course for?
This course is designed for skiers and snowboarders who are new to backcountry travel. If you’re comfortable on intermediate terrain at the resort and want to see what lies beyond the boundaries, this is the ideal first step.
